Magnesium is Having a Moment.

It's late winter here in Byron Bay. Crisp mornings, that impossibly clear light, and the humpbacks still cruising past the Cape on their way north. It's also the season when everyone in town seems to be talking about the same thing: magnesium.
And honestly? We get it. Magnesium has become THE wellness word of the moment. It's on podcasts, it's all over your feed, and the supplement aisle is suddenly wall-to-wall with magnesium pills promising better sleep, calmer nerves and faster recovery.
But before you add another bottle to your bedside table, we want to let you in on something we've believed since 2010: how you take your magnesium matters just as much as taking it.
Why is everyone suddenly obsessed with magnesium?
Magnesium is involved in hundreds of processes in your body: muscle repair, nervous system regulation, sleep, steady energy. It's one of those quiet workhorse minerals we tend not to think about until we're feeling tense, wired, or waking up with tight shoulders.
Sound familiar? You're not alone. Between busy seasons, cold-morning surfs and life in general, this time of year is exactly when most of us start feeling it.
The pill problem
Here's the thing about magnesium capsules: they're easy to buy, and even easier to forget. They sit in the cupboard. They get taken in a rush with cold coffee. And for some people, oral magnesium can be tough on the tummy.
Most of all, swallowing a pill is a chore. And we've never believed wellness should feel like a chore.
The Byron Bay way: make it a ritual
This is where we do things differently. Our magnesium isn't something you swallow and forget. It's something you apply, massage in, and actually feel. A few sprays, a minute of attention, and you're done.
Picture this: a few sprays of our Magnesium Oil massaged into tired legs and shoulders after your morning walk or surf, followed by a warm rinse. (Yes, even an outdoor shower in the winter sun counts. Especially then.) Or before bed, a handful of sprays on the soles of your feet while the kettle boils for chamomile tea.
That's the difference. A pill is a task on your to-do list. Thirty seconds of massaging in oil, or layering on our Magnesium Cream after a hard session, that's a moment of genuine self-care. And the ritual itself does real work: the act of slowing down to apply it, the warmth of your hands on tired muscles, signals to your nervous system that it's time to wind down. Magnesium plus ritual beats magnesium alone, every single time in our book.
Where and how to actually use it:
We get asked this constantly, so here's the short version:
- Soles of your feet. Thicker skin, fewer oil glands, and a fast way in, this is our go-to before bed or for calming a wired evening.
- Stomach. Good general coverage if you want a full-body, take-the-edge-off effect.
- Shoulders and neck. Straight to where the day's tension actually lives.
- Legs and arms. The obvious choice post-surf, post-hike, or after any day that pushed your body.
As a starting point, 4–6 sprays per area is plenty, massage it in properly rather than just misting and walking away. Most people find once or twice a day works well: morning for steady energy, evening for wind-down, and straight after exercise for recovery (this is where we'd reach for the Cream over the spray, for a bit more staying power on sore spots).
If you're new to magnesium oil, don't be alarmed by a mild tingling on the first few uses... it's common when your magnesium levels have been running low, and it tends to settle down as your levels top back up. If it bothers you, apply to freshly moisturised skin or start on the feet, where skin is thicker.
Your winter magnesium ritual, step by step
- Pick your moment. Evening works well this time of year — aim for 20–30 minutes before bed, or straight after a shower.
- Spray generously. 4–6 sprays per area — feet and legs are the easiest place to start.
- Massage it in. Give it a proper minute rather than letting it sit and dry.
- Layer on the Cream for anywhere that's genuinely sore — post-surf shoulders, post-hike calves.
- Keep it consistent. Like anything good for you, the payoff is in making it a nightly or post-adventure habit, not a once-off.
Made here, for this.
Everything we make is born from this place: the ocean, the hinterland, and the slower rhythm of life that Byron does best. So this winter, while the whales make their way up the coast, we invite you to trade one pill for one ritual.
You will NOT regret it.
Stay warm, Byron. 🐋
